Meet the 2017 Leaders for Life Fellows



Maria Gloria

Maria Gloria

Take Stock in Children Scholar Maria Gloria attended Lake Placid High School where she ranked 10th of her 158 graduating classmates with a 4.35 GPA. Maria boasted a rigorous academic schedule, including dual enrollment and AP courses. An honor roll student since 10th grade, she prides herself as an AVID student and has certifications in Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel. She participated in the National Honor Society for three years, and held the titles of the NHS, Ms. Interact, and student government vice president. She also participated in track and field and cross country and was the number one runner in 2015. She volunteers with the Santiago Apostol Mission as an assistant Sunday class teacher, completed Youth Leadership Highlands, and plays the violin. Maria will attend Florida State University to study computer science, and eventually hopes to attend Florida State University Law School.

Karla Menchu-Saban

Karla Menchu-Saban

  • TSIC Alumni from Palm Beach County

Take Stock in Children Scholar Karla Menchu-Saban attended Lake Worth High School. With a 4.24 GPA, she was ranked nearly in the top 5 percent of the 628 students in her graduating class. Academically, she challenged herself by taking AICE and AP classes and was dually enrolled. Karla stayed busy as the secretary of the S.H.A.P.E. Club, vice president of the Medical Honor Society, chief of staff with the JROTC Wing Staff, Safety Net Teen Program, Johnson Scholars, Trio Talent Program, Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Marching Band playing the clarinet. She volunteers with the community by offering translation services and is a certified medical interpreter. Karla plans to attend Florida Atlantic University to study nursing and pre-med.

Tien Nguyen

Tien Nguyen

  • College Focus: Biology
  • TSIC Alumni from Collier County

Take Stock in Children Scholar Tien Nguyen held a 4.99 GPA at Naples High School and was ranked 19th of 393 classmates. He has been recognized by the National Honor Society and received awards for academic excellence in AP psychology, marketing essentials & AICE thinking skills, biology, and Spanish. He was president of the NHS Interact Club and interned at Florida Gulf Coast University. He volunteers as a math and English tutor for 6th and 7th graders, volunteers with the Collier Public Library, and has completed Youth Leadership Collier and Rotary International Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders. He received the Florida Bright Futures award, and will attend the University of Florida (UF) to study biology. In addition to the Leaders For Life program, Tien has also been selected as a Machen Florida Opportunity Scholar which will provide him with a full grant and scholarship financial aid package as well as a comprehensive student support program at UF.

Liz Parra

Liz Parra

  • Florida State University - Class of 2021
  • College Focus: Computer Science or Biomedical Engineering
  • TSIC Alumni from Broward County

Take Stock in Children Scholar Liz Parra attended McArthur High School and with a 4.26 GPA, ranked 46th of the 511 students in her class. As president of Mu Alpha Theta, Liz organized an ESOL math tutoring program at her school. She was also the vice president of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club, and works part-time as a sales clerk. She has been recognized for receiving a perfect score on the algebra 1 EOC assessment, and was named the National Honor Society’s Most Valuable Member of the Year. She also participated as a cheerleader and lended her talent to Apollo Middle School’s cheerleading squad as a mentor. Liz will attend Florida State University and study computer science or biomedical engineering.

Corey Smith

Corey Smith

  • College Focus: Biochemistry and Pre-Med
  • TSIC Alumni from Lee County

Take Stock in Children Scholar Corey Smith was dually enrolled at Ida S. Baker High School and Florida Southwestern College where he had a 4.87 GPA and was ranked 8th of 431 students in his graduating class. He was involved with the JROTC program and was on its drill team/leadership team. Corey was also a member of the National Honor Society where he held office as parliamentarian and secretary, and was involved with the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church sanctuary choir and youth ministry. Outside of school, Corey volunteers at Lee Memorial Hospital in its radiology/oncology department and assists with its annual blood drive. He also helps build homes with Habitat for Humanity, feeds the homeless, and participates in the Take Stock in Children STRIDES for Education 5K. He plans to attend Florida State University to study biochemistry and pre-med.

Anthony Vigliotti

Anthony Vigliotti

  • Plans to attend University of Florida
  • College Focus:  Biochemistry and Biotechnology
  • TSIC Alumni from Charlotte County

Take Stock in Children Scholar Anthony Vigliotti held a 4.52 GPA at Florida Southwestern Collegiate High School and ranked #1 in his graduating class of 61. As a dual enrollment student, he received both his high school diploma and associate’s degree. Anthony was student government president, a Bright Futures recipient, and an active member of the National Honor Society. He works part time as a book editor and volunteers with New Operation, Cooper Street. Anthony also participates in the Relay for Life Lung Cancer 5K and has been a leader of a research project assisting members of his community. He hopes to attend the University of Florida and study biochemistry and biotechnology.
