Meet the 2017 Leaders for Life Fellows



Maria Gloria

Maria Gloria

  • Florida State University 
  • Highlands County

Maria Gloria attended Lake Placid High School and ranked 10th of her 158 classmates with a 4.35 GPA.  Maria had a rigorous academic schedule including both dual enrollment and AP courses. She was on the honor roll since 10th grade, prides herself as previous AVID student and received certifications in Microsoft WORD, Power Point and Excel.  She was a member of the National Honor Society for three years, held the title of the NHS, Ms. Interact and Student Government Vice President.  She participated in Track and Field and cross country and was the number one runner in 2015.  She volunteered with the Santiago Apostol Mission was an assistant Sunday class teacher, completed Youth Leadership Highlands and plays the violin.  Maria attends the Florida State University to study Computer Science and eventually attend Florida State University Law School.

Karla Menchu-Saban

Karla Menchu-Saban

  • Florida Atlantic University
  • Palm Beach County

Karla Menchu-Saban attended Lake Worth High School and ranked nearly in the top 5% of her class of 628 student in her class with a 4.24 GPA.  She challenged herself by taking AICE and AP classes and was dually enrolled.  Karla stayed busy as the Secretary of the S.H.A.P.E. Club, Vice President of the Medical Honor Society, Chief of Staff with the JROTC Wing Staff, Safety Net Teen Program, Johnson Scholars, Trio Talent Program, Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society and Marching Band playing the clarinet.  She volunteered with the community by offering translation services and is a certified medical interpreter.  Karla attends Florida Atlantic University studying education.

Tien Nguyen

Tien Nguyen

  • University of Florida 
  • Collier County

Tien Nguyen earned a 4.99 GPA at Naples High School and was ranked 19th of 393 classmates.  He volunteered as a math and English tutor for 6th & 7th grader as well as volunteering with the Collier Public Library. Tien was recognized by the National Honor Society and received awards for Academic Excellence, in AP Psychology, Marketing Essentials & AICE Thinking Skills, Biology and Spanish.  He was the President of the NHS Interact Club and interned at Florida Gulf Coast University. Tien completed Youth Leadership Collier and Rotary International Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders.  He received the Florida Bright Futures award and attends the University of Florida to study Business.

Liz Parra

Liz Parra

  • Florida State University
  • Broward County

Liz Parra attended McArthur High School with a GPA of 4.26 and ranked 46 of the 511 students in her class.  As President of the Mu Alpha Theta, Liz organized an ESOL math tutoring program at her school. She was the Vice President of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club and worked part time as a sales clerk.  She has been recognized for receiving a Perfect Score in Algebra 1 EOC assessment and named the National Honor Society’s Most Valuable Member of the Year.  She also participated as a cheerleader lending her talent to Apollo Middle School’s cheerleading squad as a mentor. Liz attends Florida State University and studies computer science and biomedical engineering.

Corey Smith

Corey Smith

  • Florida State University
  • Lee County

Corey Smith was dually enrolled at Ida S. Baker High School and Florida Southwestern College where he had a 4.87 GPA and was ranked 8th of 431 students in his class.  Corey volunteered at the Lee Memorial Hospital in the Radiology / Oncology department as well as helped with their annual blood drive.  He also helped to build homes with Habitat for Humanity, fed the homeless and participated in the Take Stock in Children STRIDES for Education 5K.  He was involved with the JROTC program and on the JROTC Drill Team /Leadership Team, the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir and Youth Ministry.  Corey was also a member of the National Honor Society and held office as Parliamentarian and Secretary. He attends Florida State University studying biochemistry and pre-med.

Anthony Vigliotti

Anthony Vigliotti

  • University of Florida
  • Charlotte County

Anthony Vigliotti earned a 4.52 GPA at Florida Southwestern Collegiate High School and was ranked #1 in his class of 61.  As a dual enrollment student, he not only received his high school diploma but also received his associate’s degree.  Anthony was the President of the Student Government, a Bright Futures recipient and a member of the National Honor Society.  He worked part time as a book editor and volunteered with New Operation, Cooper Street. Anthony also participated in the Relay for Life the Lung Cancer 5K and was a leader of a research project assisting members of his community. He attends University of Florida and studies biochemistry and biotechnology.
