Meet the 2015 Leaders for Life Fellows



Gabriela Cruz

Gabriela Cruz

  • University of South Florida - Class of 2019
  • Marion County

A Take Stock in Children scholar, Gabby Cruz is from Marion County and attended the Career Academy through Marion Technical Institute. She earned a 3.91 GPA, ranked 9th in her senior class and was an executive officer of the National Junior ROTC. She worked at Panera Breads part-time, interns at the Public Education Foundation and was influential member of the Save Our Schools campaign in Marion County. Gabby studies biomedical science at the University of South Florida and also serves as a Take Stock in College Student Ambassador there. After her undergrad studies, she plans to continue her education by attending medical school to become an oncologist.

Keilly Paola Pulgar

Keilly Pulgar

  • University of Florida - Class of 2019
  • Hillsborough County

A Take Stock in Children scholar, Keilly Pulgar is from Hillsborough County and graduated from Braulio Alonso High School. Keilly earned a 6.18 GPA and ranked third in her class of 515. A cancer survivor, she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in February of 2011 and underwent chemotherapy for 2 1/2 years until being declared cancer free in June of 2013. She was Senior Class President, Blood Drive Coordinator for HOSA-Future Health Professionals and Team co-caption for Relay for Life. Keilly plans on becoming a pediatric oncologist and helping other children overcome cancer at the University of Florida.

Alexis Smith

Alexis Smith

  • University of Florida - Class of 2019
  • Sarasota County

A Take Stock in Children scholar, Alexis Smith is from Sarasota County and graduated from Pine View School and enrolled at State College of Florida. She earned a 4.83 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society. Additionally, she was a member of National Hispanic Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta. She volunteered as a Sunday school teacher at Sarasota Christian Church, interned at Critical Vet Care. Additionally, Alexis also worked as a babysitter and tutor for several families in her community. She studies social work at the University of Florida.

Christian Vallejo

Christian Vallejo

  • Emory University - Class of 2019
  • Collier County

A Take Stock in Children scholar, Christian Vallejo is from Collier County and graduated from Palmetto Ridge High School and also attended Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). He earned a 5.13 GPA and ranked 7th in his class of 380 students. Christian was a member of the Palmetto Ridge Spanish National Honor Society, and the FGCU National Honor Society. He is was a member and founding president of the FGCU chapter of the American Red Cross. He attend Emory University and studies medicine, graduating in spring of 2019.
